OSHA PEL comparison: OSHA PEL is 200 ppm TWA — significantly higher than the UK limit. The NIOSH REL (100 ppm TWA) is closer to the UK WEL. For UK operations, always apply EH40 as the binding standard.
Practical note: Under COSHH, the employer must conduct a suitable and sufficient assessment of risks to health from toluene exposure and implement control measures in line with the hierarchy of controls before exposure monitoring is conducted.
